Lirecoach is made by Noctara Enterprise LLC, Pasco, Washington, United States. We are responsible for what this policy describes.
The short version
- You sign in with an email before you use the app. Your account holds that email and a username.
- Your documents, photos of pages, writing and practice are stored on your phone.
- Unless speech is kept on the phone, what the app reads aloud and what you say pass through our server to Google. We do not keep them.
- A school account also keeps your lessons, settings and the text of your documents for your school.
- No adverts. No tracking for adverts. We never sell anything about you.
What is stored on your phone
Your documents, photos of pages, imported files, writing, practice progress, stickers, recorded sounds, reading settings and saved word meanings are stored on your phone. We cannot see them there. The sections below say when some of it is sent off the phone.
Your account
You need an account to use the app. You make one with an email and a password, or a code we email you, or by signing in with Apple or Google. Your account holds:
- your email address and the username you chose;
- your name, if you sign in with Apple and Apple shares it with us;
- a random number that identifies the account;
- whether it is an iPhone or an Android phone, and the app version;
- who the app is set up for: an adult, someone studying, or a child;
- when the app was last opened, to within about half a day;
- when you agreed to our terms, and which version;
- your membership, if you have one;
- how much reading aloud and listening the account used each day, so we can set fair limits.
We use this to let you sign in on any phone, to keep a membership with the right person, to count how many people use the app, and to fix problems. We use your email to send sign in codes and one welcome email, and nothing else unless you ask. We send them from info@lirecoach.com through Google Workspace. If you sign in with Apple or Google, they confirm who you are to us; their own privacy policies apply to that.
If you buy a membership
Apple or Google takes the payment. We never see your card. They tell us, through a service called RevenueCat, which plan you have, when it renews or ends, and whether it was refunded. RevenueCat knows your account number but not your name. The app talks to RevenueCat when you sign in and when the Membership page opens, to show prices and check your membership.
What leaves your phone
- The reading voice. When the app reads something aloud, that text is sent, through our server, to Google Cloud Text to Speech, and the spoken result to Google Cloud Speech to Text to time the word highlighting. We do not keep either. With Keep speech on this phone or Stay offline on, or with no connection, a voice on your phone reads instead and nothing is sent. In the version for children Keep speech on this phone is on from the start.
- Dictation, and reading out loud in practice. Your phone turns speech into words, and some phones send speech to Apple or Google to do it. The app also records what you say while the microphone is on and sends that recording, through our server, to Google Cloud Speech to Text to understand it more exactly. The recording is deleted from your phone straight after, and we do not keep it. Keep speech on this phone or Stay offline stops all of this: only your phone's own offline recogniser is used, and if your phone has none, the app says so and does not listen.
- Word meanings. When you tap a word whose meaning is not stored on your phone, that word alone is looked up online in a free dictionary (dictionaryapi.dev) and on Wikipedia, which also sends a picture. Stay offline stops this. In the version for children no pictures are fetched, but words are still looked up unless Stay offline is on.
- Reading a hard page again. Only when you tap Try reading it again and then Send, that one photo goes to Google's Gemini service to be read. Google may keep it. Do not send anything private. With Stay offline on, this is not offered.
- Quiz me. Only when you tap Quiz me and then Send, the words of the part of the document you are reading go to Google's Gemini service, which writes three questions about them. The questions are not kept. Google may keep the words. Do not send anything private. With Stay offline on, this is not offered.
- Reading photos on your phone. Photos and scanned pages are read on your phone. On Android, and on an iPhone when Apple's own reader cannot read a page, this uses Google's ML Kit. Under Google's ML Kit terms, the photo and the words read from it stay on your phone, but ML Kit sends Google metrics about how it performs and is used, and may download updates from Google. Stay offline does not stop this.
- Crash reports. If the app crashes while you are signed in, it sends us a report the next time it opens: the error, where in the app's code it happened, which screen, the app version, the kind of phone, who the app is set up for, and your account. It is built to leave out what you read, write or type. None is sent when the app is set up for a child or used as a shared school device.
- Problem reports. Separately, the app keeps a short problem report on your phone after a crash. It is only sent if you choose Send the report, and then it goes wherever you send it.
- News notifications. If you turn on News from Lirecoach, your phone's notification address is stored with your account and used, through Expo, Apple and Google, to deliver them. If the app is then set up for a child, the address is removed. The three day reminder is set up on your phone and sends nothing.
Stay offline
With Stay offline on in Settings, the app does not send what you read, say or photograph anywhere: no word meanings online, no Google voice, no Google listening, no online reader and no Quiz me. These still use the internet: signing in and the account check described above, your membership, news notifications if you turned them on, crash reports, ML Kit's metrics, and, for a school account, saving your work for your school.
Children
Signing in comes first, before the app knows who it is for. A child's account therefore has an email, or an Apple or Google sign in, like any other. A parent or guardian should make the account and sign in for the child, using the grown up's own email, and then choose the setup for a child.
In the setup for a child, a grown up answers a question before anything is bought, before the account or anything else is deleted, before a photo is sent to the online reader or a document to Quiz me, and before speech is allowed to go online. The question checks that a grown up is there; it does not prove who they are. Speech stays on the phone from the start, word cards fetch no pictures, news notifications are not offered, and no crash reports are sent. The account still records that the app is set up for a child, and checks in as described above.
If you think a child has given us their own email or other information without a parent or guardian, write to us and we will delete it.
School accounts
If your school has Lirecoach and you sign in with your school email, a little more is kept, so your teacher can help and so your work follows you onto a shared school iPad:
- which lessons you finished, and when;
- words you looked up, and when;
- your reading settings;
- the text of your documents. Never the photos.
Your teacher and your school admin see the first two. Nobody at your school can read your documents. There are no scores, and no school can see another school's students. Your school decides how this data is used, under the student data privacy agreement it signs with us. Ask your school if you want to see, correct or delete it. Stay offline does not stop this saving.
Where it is kept, and for how long
Accounts are stored with Supabase, in Sydney, Australia. We keep an account until it is deleted. Payment records may be kept longer where the law requires it. Crash reports are kept to fix problems; when an account is deleted, its crash reports stay without any link to the account.
Your choices
- Delete your account: in the app, open Membership or Your account, choose Delete my account, then Delete it. Or email us. This deletes your account and what we keep with it, including a school account's saved work. It does not cancel a store subscription, and RevenueCat's own record of your purchases is not deleted by it; email us to have that removed. On the phone, your recorded sounds, pictures of pages and problem reports are removed. The words of your documents and your practice stay on the phone until you delete the app or another account signs in on it.
- See or correct what we hold: email us and we will send it to you.
- Limit what leaves your phone: Stay offline, Keep speech on this phone and News from Lirecoach are switches in Settings. Signing in, the account check, your membership, crash reports (outside the setup for a child and shared school devices), ML Kit's metrics and a school account's saving have no switch.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we will say so in the app before it applies. See also our terms of use.
